Ashton Under Hill First School

Shaping Bright Futures Together

Hawthorn Wb 09 June

We started our new book in English this week, called 'How to hide a lion at school'. The children love it and had great fun acting out some of the key scenes, as you'll see from the photos. Now that they've learned the story, we'll explore its grammatical features before they have a go at writing their own stories.

In maths, Year 1s have been working on numbers up to 100, but one group counted all the ten sticks into groups of 100 and came up with 1070 altogether! What a fantastic achievement! Meanwhile, Year 2s have started work on 'money', so any support you can give them with that at home would be most welcome - particularly with the tricky business of giving change.

We've finished our Castles topic with another art project following on from last week's masterpieces - which can be seen here. This time, we've been using crayons and texture plates, so there'll be another art gallery to share with you next week.

In computing, the children found out how to improve their photography skills while in RE, they learnt about The Five Pillars of Allah.

In Science we have started our topic of Uses of Everyday Materials and went out for a materials walk to see different items and what they were made of.

Finally, in Music we looked at rhythm, specifically a poem called "Hush" where we thought about what quiet percussion  could go with it and then tried to read it along with body percussion sounds. It was a lovely quiet piece, but not quite as quiet as a classical piece that we watched called "Silence."  I'm sure your child will be able to tell you about it!
