Shaping Bright Futures Together

2425 Holly Class Week beginning 3rd February

We have had a special delivery in Holly class! Pog the penguin arrived at the school door and Mrs Brown brought him into us as he was carrying a letter addressed to the children in Holly class. In his letter, Pog said that he knows all about penguins but nothing about other animals. To help him out, the children have all been working really hard this week to create their own animal fact file books for a favourite animal of their choice, they have all done a brilliant job. The Year 1 children have shown how they can independently write question sentences and answer them with sequenced sentences whilst the Reception children have done a super job of using their phonics skills to write about their chosen animal. The children have also painted a picture and created a title for their front cover of their very own little book.

In maths this week all of the children have been learning about mass and capacity. They have enjoyed exploring how to use the balance scales and the Reception children have been on a mission to find the mass of classroom objects whilst the Year 1 children have focussed on using the correct vocabulary and comparing mass. Towards the end of the week we started to think about capacity and used sand and different sizes and shapes of containers to describe and compare volume. The children have been using vocabulary such as full, empty, half full, nearly full and nearly empty as well as trying to work out if the tallest containers always have the greatest capacity.

In geography this week the children have been finding out about what a compass is. They found images of them on different maps we have been using as well as looking at compasses that walkers and hikers might use alongside a map to find their way. We then played a game to practise using the language of the compass directions and made our own compass!

The year 1 children have also been thinking about habitats in their science lessons and using beebots in their computing sessions.
