Willow class have been exploring the text 'Mimi and the mountain dragon' by Michael Morpurgo in our writing lessons. This is a story about a girl who discovers a baby dragon in the family woodshed. We thought of ways to persuade Mimi to keep the dragon and the explained the repercussions of this. We explored what Mimi is like as a character and found evidence from the text to support our ideas. On Tuesday, we wrote in role as Mimi and described the moment she discovered the baby dragon on Christmas morning. We then retold a section of the story using adverbials to move the plot forward.
In Maths, the Year 3 children have been working on their problem solving skills and have had a go at some open ended problems where they had to find more than one solution. They worked together brilliantly and managed to apply their mental maths skills as well as think about working systematically. The Year 4 children have been learning about decimal place value and used part part whole diagrams to partition numbers into tenths and hundredths.
This week as part of our Science, the children have been learning about pollination and seed dispersal. We learned why pollinators are an important part of the ecosystem and their role in reproduction. The children also learned about how seeds are dispersed, and the children thought of lots of questions to try and find out more about this topic. We explored the life cycle of a strawberry and explained this process. Next week we will learn about the life cycle of other plants including a dandelion.
In Topic, we began our new Geography topic called 'Exploring the UK'. The children completed a thinking squares activity to find out what we already know about the UK before creating a map with labels. We reflected on our previous topic and considered where Worcestershire fits into the UK and recalled some key facts too.
