This month Oak class has been exploring multiplication and division methods in Maths. We have learnt formal methods such as short and long multiplication, as well as short division. We have used manipulatives, such as dienes, place value counters and place value charts, to aid our understanding. We have also been exploring patterns in the eight and nine times tables.
In English the children have produced some fantastic versions of ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin,’ taking on the point of view of the rats, the Mayor or the Piper himself. We are now exploring the series of non-fiction books, ‘The Genius of the Ancients’ by Izzi Howell in preparation for creating our own class book on Ancient Islamic Civilisations which our topic this term.
In topic we have been studying the importance of Baghdad in Ancient Islamic Civilisations and what some of its markets were like. We have researched some of the objects that would have been found for sale here and designed and created our own oil lamps, bracelets or condiment dishes out of clay.
This week has been Children’s Mental Health week and we have been exploring what it means to have their own ‘place’ and sense of belonging. This theme has run alongside our regular timetable with short discussions and activities.
