Holly Class Week beginning 5th May
It has been a short but busy week in Holly class after the bank holiday weekend. In both our history and drawing club lessons we have continued to learn all about castles. As well as enjoying our role play castle, the children worked in groups to build their own castles in our outdoor area. They were challenged to try to include all of the key features we had learnt about including things such as moats, a drawbridge, and a portcullis. Lots of house points were awarded for some super teamwork. We have also started to learn about why people in the past built castles.
Our drawing club lessons have been led by a book called 'The Castle the King Built', it has taught us about the many different types of people who were involved in the building and running of castles such as carpenters, masons, grooms and servants. The Reception children have written some brilliant sentences, thinking very carefully about the sounds in their words and remembering finger spaces. The Year 1 children have been learning about singular and plural words and working hard to remember the rules for adding '-s' or '-es'.
In maths this week the Year 1 children have been learning to tell the time to the hour and half hour. We have done lots of practical work with the big interactive clock as well as small clocks that the children can use themselves. Keep an eye on the clock this weekend and see if the children can help you tell the time at home! The Reception children have been working on numbers up to 20 this week. They have done lots of counting and building of numbers between 10 and 20 as well as working on recognising the numerals.
Thursday was VE day. In the morning we spent time learning about what VE day is and why it is important, particularly this year. We made some bunting to use as part of the whole school celebration in the afternoon. After lunch we joined with the rest of school for a special assembly, we decorated a biscuit and enjoyed a eating it and having a sing song with everyone on the field.
This week we said goodbye for now and good luck to Miss Hunt as she begins her maternity leave, we will miss her very much and look forward to hearing all of her news soon. It has been lovely that Mrs Woods was able to join us for the day on Tuesday and also Friday afternoon as she will be teaching Holly class on Mondays and Tuesdays from next week.
