Plastic in the Ocean
Our Environminnies Eco Team decided that they wanted Plastic in the Ocean to be the focus for our Eco Afternoon. We retrieved the pants that had been planted in the playground flower bed 2 years ago and found that the micro organisms in the soil had eaten all of the natural cotton fibre, but the elastic within in the waistband and structure of the pants was still totally intact.
Artie gave us a fantastic overview of his visit to Costa Rica and stressed the importance of conservation to maintain this rich eco system. We then talked about the problem posed by plastic in the ocean, and the threat to wildlife and humans. We discovered why plastic is such a valuable material, but also the threat it poses. Our solutions were to recycle and reuse but wherever possible reduce the amount of plastic bought thus reducing the amount of plastic that is manufactured.
